Mongolia or bust for intrepid fund-raisers

A GROUP of mates from Sutherland Shire are driving 16,000 kilometres across Europe to raise money for charity in a car that has been described as a ‘‘highly unsuitable granny-mobile’’.

Ryan Lindfield, 27, of Grays Point and Shaun and Chris Thodey, both 27, of Cronulla, are taking part in the London to Mongolia Rally from July 13 to August 30.

The rally raises money for the Katoke Trust Charity, a voluntary organisation founded in the shire to address poverty in the Katoke area of Tanzania.

It also supports Cool Earth, a not-for-profit organisation which works with local rainforest communities to protect their homes from logging.

The trio are bringing along their Arabic-speaking friend Monica Gayed, 28, of Avalon, to assist them with their journey across Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.

They will have no global positioning unit (GPS) or support crew. They are part of The Adventurists, a movement that aims to do exciting things while raising cash for charity.
