Historic Visit Opens Door To Expanded Mongolia-Thailand Ties

ULAN BATOR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Mongolia and Thailand are expected to strengthen trade and other ties following the historic three-day visit of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, which ended Monday.

The visit was the first by a Thai prime minister since the two nations formed diplomatic relations in 1974, China's Xinhua news agency said quoting local media's report.

During her meetings with Mongolian leaders, including President Elbegdorj, Prime Minister Norov Altanhuyag and Chairman of the State Great Hural (parliament) Zandaakhuu Enkhbold, the two sides vowed to enhance cooperation in mining, energy, agriculture, culture, education and tourism.

The two sides explored the idea of building joint industrial parks to develop a garment industry based on Mongolian cashmere and Thai silk.

They also agreed to establish a government Cooperation Committee to support private sector trade and investment, and exchanged views on launching two-way commercial flights.

Yingluck invited her Mongolian counterpart to visit Thailand.

Mongolia and Thailand are planning a series of cultural events next year to mark the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
