Rotary provides cardiovascular treatment for 300 children

The Mongolian ‘Tuul’ Rotary Club and the Korean Rotary Club announced on Sunday that 300 children have been treated for cardiovascular disease since 2004 under their joint project titled ‘Children’s Heart.’

The announcement was made at a meeting between the two Rotary Clubs at the Khaan Palace Hotel on March 4.

The Tuul and Korean Rotary Clubs have been jointly implementing the ‘Children’s Heart’ project for nine years. Under this project, Mongolian children with congenital cardiovascular defects or disease who cannot be treated in Mongolia have been sent to hospitals in Korea for treatment, funded by the Rotary Clubs. At least 10 children are sent each year. Only children from low income families, without the financial means to pay for surgery, are enrolled in the project.

The children are treated at the Severance Hospital of the Yonsei University Health System and at the Sejong General Hospital, among others. Each surgery costs between 20 and 70 million MNT.

The ‘Children’s Heart’ project has also involved cooperative activities between the Rotary Club members and the Mother and Child Health Research Center to fund training of doctors and related medical staff, and to provide essential medical equipment and ambulances.

A new initiative of the Rotary Clubs is to create opportunities to treat children with congenital cardiovascular defects and disease in Mongolia. This is being supported by the government.

Rotary International was founded over 100 years ago and aims to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. Rotary can be construed as a group of volunteers and humanitarians who conduct charity work wherever needed, to help the poor. Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations.

According to Rotary International, there are 34,000 rotary clubs in 166 countries across the globe, with around 1.2 million members. The first ever rotary club in Mongolia was established in May 1995 and the Mongolian club joined Rotary International in the same year.
