Permanent representative of Mongolia welcomed to IAEA

On March 18th Gunaajav Batjargal, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to the Republic of Austria, was accepted as Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ambassador G.Batjargal handed over his credentials to the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in Vienna, Austria. Ambassador G.Batjargal is also the representative of Mongolia to other International Organisations including OSCE, UNODC and UNIDO.

Following the official ceremony the attending parties exchanged views on collaboration between Mongolia and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ambassador G.Batjargal emphasized that this year marks the 40th year of Mongolia’s membership to the IAEA where Mongolia has successfully been cooperating with the IAEA in exploiting the atomic energy for peaceful purposes.

Mongolia has especially invested research into preventing cancer and in combating animals’ infectious diseases. Director General Yu. Amano underlined that Mongolia is one of the leading countries in treatment for these areas. He expressed his confidence that Mongolia would expand this collaboration with the IAEA and will in the future join agreements and conventions on nuclear safety and will also participate actively in international meetings at ministerial level.

Director Genera Yukiya Amano visited Mongolia in 2010. Since then 12 million US dollars in projects and programmes have been implemented by the IAEA in Mongolia.
