Nuclear development set for 1.8 million MNT budget

The Nuclear Energy Authority of Mongolia organized a tutorial seminar, “Uses of nuclear energy and prospects” on Friday March 1st where officials and experts of the Nuclear Energy Authority made speeches on nuclear technology trends, uses and developments.

The Head of Nuclear Technology of the Nuclear Energy Authority, B.Bayarbadrakh, spoke on the subject.

-How many projects and programs of nuclear technology are being undertaken in Mongolia?

-Numerous projects and programs on nuclear energy and technology, backed by both domestic and foreign financial support, have been undertaken in the power, health, agriculture, mining and manufacture industries in Mongolia.

Mongolia has launched over 60 projects of 12 million US dollars since it joined IAEA’s technical cooperation in 1975.

Mongolia approved 1.8 million Euros in 8 projects with the cooperation program between Mongolia and IAEA.

Projects on nuclear safety and the strength of radioactive emission control with financial support from the EU and U.S. Department of Energy have taken place.

The Nuclear Energy Authority also carries out 8 sub-projects along with research institutes and survey centres while financing a two phased program in order to make the way for nuclear safety and steady development.

-It is said nuclear technology will bring progress in agriculture?

-We expect 49 percent of the total projects will be for food and agriculture up till 2014.
Cattle husbandry is a traditional Mongolian industry. Therefore it is important to reduce animal disease while improving animal products. For the agronomy sector it needs to improve seeds varieties, storing and decontaminating and extending the life of the harvest.

The projects which were jointly delivered with the animal husbandry institute have showed first results. We expect nuclear technology will bring progress to every social sector.

-You have mentioned many things about the advantages of nuclear technology. But what are the adverse effects? Are there no disadvantages?

-Of course there may be bad effects. A nuclear accident would bring disaster to the population. The environment might be polluted from radioactivity. But we will consider every aspect of the risks before using it.

-Mongolian officials talk about exploring and exporting yellow powder processing uranium. But isn’t the waste of processing yellow powder is destructive to the environment?

-The decomposition elements are left untouched after processing. This means the radioactive elements are not changed after the processing.

Millions of people on the earth use nuclear technology and benefit from it in medicine, education, mining, agriculture and the food industry.

But Mongolians see nuclear as a danger. Actually proper use of nuclear technology plays an important role in the everyday life of the modern world.

Mongolia first launched a nuclear technology project in the medical sector and used it in X-ray treatments against cancer after 1950.

We aim to widely use it to diagnose tumours in the early stages, treat inflammation, sanitise medical facilities and equipment and to reduce diseases further.
