Mongolian surgeons successfully transplant vertebrae

Qualified Mongolian surgeons successfully removed and transplanted a patient`s vertebrae bones, atlas C2 and C4, for the first time. Surgeons of the Neurosurgical Department of the State Central Third Hospital conducted the delicate surgical operation on March 21st.

There are seven vertebrae or bones in the neck spine C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7. The first vertebrae, or C1 is also known as the atlas, and C2 is known as the axis. They control certain areas of the head, neck and upper back, including the arms and hands. More specifically ะก2 controls head and neck movement and C4 controls the upper body muscles.

Mongolian professional surgeons M.Enkhbold and N.Abai conducted the operation successfully for the first in Mongolia. The operation lasted almost five hours.

Medical experts say that this delicate surgical operation has proved Mongolian doctors, especially the surgeons` skill and mastership of their profession.
