Mongolian journalism celebrates 100th anniversary today

Mongolia celebrates the 100th anniversary of national journalism today. Various activities and event have been conducted in the lead-up to the anniversary and more will be held over the coming weeks.

One such event was a conference on the history of journalism in Mongolia, which took place at the National University of Mongolia (NUM) Meeting Hall on March 4.

The opening address of the conference noted that the first newspaper in Mongolia was the ‘Shine Toli hemeeh Bichig’ (New Mirror), the first issue of which was published on March 6, 1913. This was followed by the ‘Niislel Khureenii Sonin Bichig’ (Niislel Khuree Newspaper), which reflected the capital city’s name (Niislel Khuree) at the time. This newspaper was published between 1914 and 1920.

Since 1913 Mongolian journalism has grown and developed significantly, and Mongolia today has 17 daily newspapers, over 50 television channels, over 130 magazines and over 60 websites.

According to B.Norovsuren, a Professor of Journalism in the Journalism Department of the School of Social Science at the NUM, the editor-in-chief of the first two newspapers, J.Tseveen, is considered the ‘founding father’ of Mongolian journalism. In his speech at the conference, B.Norovsuren described J.Tseveen’s life and career and his inestimable contributions to journalism in Mongolia.

B.Norovsuren also shared interesting facts about the articles published by the first Prime Minister of Mongolia, D.Bodoo; the Minister of Finance B.Dorj and about Badrakhbaatar a famous intellectual who wrote for both of the first two newspapers.

The conference also included speeches by State Honored Worker of Mongolia and Senior Journalist, T.Baasansuren; NUM Lecturer and State Honored Worker, M.Zulkafil; and NUM lecturer, Dr S.Amartuvshin.
