First Solar donates 150 PV modeuls for 2013 Solar Decathlon

PV manufacturer First Solar is sponsoring students from the Inner Mongolia University of Technology to take part in the Solar Decathlon competition in China later in this year.

The Solar Decathlon is a competition developed by the US Department of Energy in 2002, which takes place every over other year in different countries around the world. The event in August this year will be the first time it has taken place in China.

The contest challenges students to design and engineer houses with net zero energy consumption. The solar powered houses are efficient in the areas of electric functionality and sustainability.

First Solar has donated 150 thin-film solar modules with maximum generated capacity of 13MW to IMUT’s Team Green Sun.

The company will offer technical services under collaboration with the IMUT on solar education. The company’s donation constitutes its third time to participate in this contest.

Among the participants 22 teams come from various places around the world and 13 teams represent the host country.

The Team Green Sun will take inspiration for its design from the yurt, a typical tent-liked dwelling used in the region of Inner Mongolia and other parts of Central China.

The Team Green Sun aims to investigate energy impediments for the region such as power grid inaccessibility, water shortages and high heating demands.

Members of the Team Green Sun are 21 graduate and undergraduate students from a range of subjects such as energy and power engineering, architecture, civil engineering and management.

Bruce Yung, First Solar’s manager director and vice president of business development for China said: “We are proud to support IMUT’s Team Green Sun in bringing cost-effective and energy-efficient technology to the region. China represents a very important market for First Solar. The fact that this year’s Solar Decathlon is being held here is reflective of the government’s commitment to developing the solar industry to meet interlinking economic, energy and environmental goals.”

Jim Brown, First Solar’s executive vice opresident of global business development said: “We hope that by participating in the Solar Decathlon competitions, we can further raise awareness about the importance of solar technologies in achieving a sustainable energy future.”
