6 Teens Trapped in Avalanche in Remote Siberian Region

6 teens trapped in avalanche: Several Russian teens in a remote mountainous area in Siberia were trapped in an avalanche.

Russian officials on Sunday said that six teenagers were trapped during an avalanche in the Tuva region of Siberia.

They cited a distress call that came in on late Sunday afternoon from the region, which is remote and mountainous, located around 60 miles north of the border with Mongolia, reported The Associated press.

The state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported that actually seven teens were trapped in the avalanche, specifically located around 4 miles from the village of Mugur-Asky. A search and rescue mission is currently underway, it said.

“According to available information, seven teenagers aged 16-17 who are pupils of a local secondary school could have been trapped in the avalanche,” the Russian Interior Ministry said in a statement obtained by the news agency.

It was not clear why the teenagers were in the area.

However, Pavel Astakhov, a children’s rights official, said the children were attempting to erect flags as a type of good luck charm. According to local popular legend, the small flags could bring happiness.

“The tragedy happened because of the reckless venture undertaken by the boys,” he wrote on his Twitter page @RFdeti, according to Reuters. “Now we are trying to find out where their parents are.”

Authorities deployed dozens of rescue workers and a helicopter in their search for the teens.
