East Mongolia, Part 2: A journey to the homeland of Choilbalsan
Choibalsan is Mongolia's fourth-largest city and the capital of Dornod, the country's easternmost aimag, which borders Russia to the north and China to the east. The city's most famous former citizen, Khorloogiin Choibalsan, was one of the founding fathers of a socialist Mongolia in 1921 and went on to become the undisputed head of state, government, and military of the world's second socialist country, ruling Mongolia with absolute power until his last breath. After the downfall of the supporting Soviet Union, both the national and the local economies collapsed. Today his namesake city has one of the country's highest unemployment rates, and, with little hope for a prosperous future, the young locals are fleeing the dying city.
