Children hold flash mob dance in protest against air pollution

Over one hundred children gathered at Sukhbaatar Square yesterday to protest against Ulaanbataar’s air pollution. The children held a “flash mob” dance performance, which featured several types of dances, ranging from modern ballet to hip-hop and break dancing.

The children all wore white masks to illustrate the main purpose of their event, which was to draw attention to the issue of air pollution in the city.

A 14-year old participant in the flash mob dance said, “The air pollution in Ulaanbaatar is so bad that children are getting many dangerous diseases. We don’t want to breathe polluted air.”

A flash mob event is a sudden assembly of people in a public place to perform an event or dance for the purpose of getting public attention on a certain issue. This event was organized by the NGO Muruudliin Emegteichuud, the UB Dance School, the local city government, the Ineedeg Mask (Laughing Mask) program and the Mongolian National Broadcasting Corporation television station.
